One year after leaving Montana it feels right to finally be painting one of its iconic landmarks, Square Butte.

Square Butte is featured in numerous Charlie Russell paintings and was central to his Montana cowboy life. Today much of the surrounding prairie remains the same as in Russell's day, with sagebrush and antelope still dotting the Central Montana grassland.

This is the final painting in my series "Seasons of the Giant".  The Helena Valley and its prominent geographical landmark, the Sleeping Giant, are bathed in shades of green as the grasses and crops start growing in early summer.  By summer's end the landscape has shifted to browns and golds as autumn approaches.

Tooting My Horn!

SOLD

Hello all,

My wife regularly reminds me that I don’t toot my horn enough concerning my art.
Well, here goes . . . Ta,da,da,da . . TOOT!

In April I applied to become a member of The New Zone Gallery, a cooperative gallery in downtown Eugene which has been active for about 28 years. After an interview and viewing some samples of my art, a jury of New Zone members invited me to join the gallery.

A few days later I had five pieces of art on the wall at New Zone, just in time for Eugene’s May First Friday Art Walk.  And the next Monday I sold two pieces! I sold “Spring Evening on Broken Top” and “Reflecting on Mount Hood” to a woman who was moving soon to Austin, Texas. She wanted some art to take with her that would remind her of Oregon.

I am now working on a few new pieces which I will post as they are completed. The New Zone Gallery hangs a new show approximately every two months; and they require artists to change the pieces they display each time to keep things fresh in the Gallery. So I’ll be busy creating more inventory!

For now, here is a photo of an untitled wood burning I created circa 1978 which is in a private collection here in Eugene.

To automatically receive my posts please enter your email address in the “Follow By Email” box on my blog site. I would appreciate it.

Happy Spring. Be sure to get outside and enjoy the beauty.

Reflecting On Mount Hood

SOLD

To celebrate my first completed painting since my return to Eugene, Oregon, I am offering free shipping for this piece within the United States.

My studio space is rounding into shape; and I’ve been busy.
“Reflecting” is the first piece of artwork completed in my new studio.

This piece depicts a Central Oregon landscape – combining my friend Gil Helm’s photograph and my slide images of two ski trips on Mount Hood. My June 27, 2013 posting was the preliminary sketch for this painting.

I have skied into Tilly Jane Cabin, below Cooper’s Spur, (which in this painting is the knob on the left side of Mount Hood just below the summit). While going through my slides I reflected on cherished memories of the mountain, the state of Oregon, and most importantly, my friends.

“Reflecting on Mount Hood” is a gallery wrap painting (all canvas edges are painted) so you have the option of hanging the piece without a frame.
