The Shaman's Bear

I have been exploring my Sami heritage in art and have painted two images relating to the Sami and the animal world.  The first is titled "The Shaman's Bear".  It is an oil painting on cradled birch veneer and is painted in the Sami national colors with bear images from a Shaman's drum circling the bear.  The painting measures 8" by 8" and is framed in a floater frame.  The price is $135.00 plus shipping.

I am looking for a new credit card payment system, other than PayPal, and haven't settled on one yet.  So in the interim, personal checks or money orders will work.

The reason I have removed all Pay Pal payment options is that the owner/founder of Pay Pal is an avid supporter of Donald Trump.  I am neither a Democrat or a Republican, but a follower of the political and social/economic principles that Theodore Roosevelt promoted and supported.  I am a BULL MOOSE PROGRESSIVE.  Please research what TR did for our country and what the principals of  his breakaway party from the Republicans, the Bull Moose Party, did for our country.

When I lived in Missoula, Montana in the 1990's, I used to drive south on U.S. 93 to Lolo Pass to cross-country ski. I always passed an ancient Ponderosa Pine that  had colorful cloth and other items hanging from its branches.  It is called the Medicine Tree and is sacred to the Salish Tribe.  The cloth and other items were offerings from tribal members and others.
A storm blew the tree down in 2001, but the pine cones were retrieved to plant and grow a new tree by the Salish.  Tribal leaders decided to leave the remaining 16 foot snag standing and people continue to leave offerings and pray on the sacred site.  For my painting I placed my iconic tree, decorated with prayer flags, in the Bitterroot Mountains, with Trapper Peak in the background.
Below is a short history of the original Medicine Tree from the State of Montana web site:

MEDICINE TREE
This Ponderosa Pine has been standing guard here on the bend of the river for nearly 400 years. Somewhere, imbedded in its trunk, a few feet above the ground, is the horn of a Big Horn ram, the basis of a legend which across the centuries has established the historical significance of the pine as a Medicine Tree. Once upon a time, when the tree was small, according to Salish Indian lore, a mountain sheep of giant stature and with massive, curling horns, accepting a challenge from his hereditary enemy Old Man Coyote, attempted to butt it down. The little pine stood firm, but one of the ram's horns caught in the bole, impaling the luckless sheep, causing his death. A Salish war party chased the coyote away from his anticipated feast and then hung offerings of beads, cloth, ribbon and other items on the ram's horns as good medicine tokens to his bravery and to free the scene of evil. Countless succeeding Indian tribes followed the practice until, less than 100 years ago, the horn disappeared within the tree. But the Indians continue to regard it as a shrine an even the white men honor its sacred legend.

This piece is based on a spring 1985 ski trip to Broken Top volcano in the Oregon Cascades. We spent a warm day skiing from rim-to-rim, carving turns in the soft snow, wearing tee shirts and shorts.

At the time I wasn't aware that there is a glacial lake in the crater underneath the spring snow. I recently came across a photo of the lake in summer with it's water a turquoise tint; and I used that color in this painting to paint the creek which flows out of the lake in spring.

I like this one a lot, Rick--came out really well. Especially enjoy the stylized design of the stream.

One year after leaving Montana it feels right to finally be painting one of its iconic landmarks, Square Butte.

Square Butte is featured in numerous Charlie Russell paintings and was central to his Montana cowboy life. Today much of the surrounding prairie remains the same as in Russell's day, with sagebrush and antelope still dotting the Central Montana grassland.

This is the final painting in my series "Seasons of the Giant".  The Helena Valley and its prominent geographical landmark, the Sleeping Giant, are bathed in shades of green as the grasses and crops start growing in early summer.  By summer's end the landscape has shifted to browns and golds as autumn approaches.

Tooting My Horn!

SOLD

Hello all,

My wife regularly reminds me that I don’t toot my horn enough concerning my art.
Well, here goes . . . Ta,da,da,da . . TOOT!

In April I applied to become a member of The New Zone Gallery, a cooperative gallery in downtown Eugene which has been active for about 28 years. After an interview and viewing some samples of my art, a jury of New Zone members invited me to join the gallery.

A few days later I had five pieces of art on the wall at New Zone, just in time for Eugene’s May First Friday Art Walk.  And the next Monday I sold two pieces! I sold “Spring Evening on Broken Top” and “Reflecting on Mount Hood” to a woman who was moving soon to Austin, Texas. She wanted some art to take with her that would remind her of Oregon.

I am now working on a few new pieces which I will post as they are completed. The New Zone Gallery hangs a new show approximately every two months; and they require artists to change the pieces they display each time to keep things fresh in the Gallery. So I’ll be busy creating more inventory!

For now, here is a photo of an untitled wood burning I created circa 1978 which is in a private collection here in Eugene.

To automatically receive my posts please enter your email address in the “Follow By Email” box on my blog site. I would appreciate it.

Happy Spring. Be sure to get outside and enjoy the beauty.

Reflecting On Mount Hood

SOLD

To celebrate my first completed painting since my return to Eugene, Oregon, I am offering free shipping for this piece within the United States.

My studio space is rounding into shape; and I’ve been busy.
“Reflecting” is the first piece of artwork completed in my new studio.

This piece depicts a Central Oregon landscape – combining my friend Gil Helm’s photograph and my slide images of two ski trips on Mount Hood. My June 27, 2013 posting was the preliminary sketch for this painting.

I have skied into Tilly Jane Cabin, below Cooper’s Spur, (which in this painting is the knob on the left side of Mount Hood just below the summit). While going through my slides I reflected on cherished memories of the mountain, the state of Oregon, and most importantly, my friends.

“Reflecting on Mount Hood” is a gallery wrap painting (all canvas edges are painted) so you have the option of hanging the piece without a frame.
